"I am never flying again!"

On my way home from Utah, almost two weeks ago, I had a very humbling experience.  It has to do with Millie, the flight home...I'll stop there.

Now, before I begin let me give you a little background.  Millie has been and continues to be a fairly easy baby.  She has slept through the night (majority of the time) since 3 1/2 months, she has always been a good eater, she's not fussy...you get the picture.  I can count on one hand how many times I haven't known what is wrong with her.  Usually something fixes whatever problem she is having-whether it be a pacifier, food, a blanket, toys, kisses, etc.

Well this particular day was going well.  Millie took a nap on the way to the airport, which I was planning on her doing.  When we got to the airport, she was happy and content.  Checked through security, and ran into another mom with a newborn baby who was only 11 weeks old.  We got to talking and she said it was only her third flight with her baby.  She said that her baby had done pretty well on each flight, but she was nervous.  As I was too, but I was feeling pretty confident.  I have flown multiple times with Millie, and EVERY flight had been great. (key word. Had.)

We boarded the plane to Denver, and we sat by these two cute moms who were going to a graduation.  Millie played with toys, we enjoyed cookies, read books, talked with the ladies next to us, watched Backyardigans...ya know the usual.  We landed, and exited the plane.  It was about a two hour flight and Millie did great!

For the next flight, I planned ahead and asked one of the coffee shops for some warm water for her bottle.  I mixed the formula and water together so that it'd be ready for when we boarded the next plane.  Things were going well at this point.  Millie was getting a little fussy because it was bedtime, but once again, I had planned it this way.  I thought to myself, perfect she'll drink her bottle and fall asleep right when the plane takes off and sleep the whole way (or at least an hour) and be happy and great the whole time.

We boarded the aircraft, and watched as everyone piled in.  I was hoping there would be an empty seat next to me, as I'm sure most people hope for, but unfortunately there wasn't.  A young man sat next to me, who told the girl next to him that he was visiting family from Utah.  Hallelujah!  He knows what big families are like, babies, crazy houses, etc.  So I didn't worry too much.

The flight took off and as planned, I held Millie, put her blanket by her face, and gave her a bottle...

she pushed the bottle away.  No big deal.  Maybe she wasn't tired or hungry yet (although it was the right time for her to have the bottle and go to sleep).  We read a few books and then she got pretty fussy.  Annoying I know.  She was tired. Hungry. Sick of being on airplanes. And just wanted her own bed with her comfy jammies on and a warm bottle.

Still fussy.  I tried to give her the bottle again...but she didn't want it.  I pulled out toys, books, movies, food, etc...but each of these things only lasted ten minutes max and she'd be fussy again wanting something else.  I changed her diaper...fixed the problem for five minutes...still fussy.  We played with ice...again fixed the problem for seven minutes and she was soaked and still fussy.

Yes, I was the annoying mother who didn't know how to calm her baby.  I was the mom who everyone hates to sit by.  I was the mom whose baby fussed/cried pretty much the whole flight...and there was nothing I could do about it.

We stood in the back and I forced her to lay down in my arms.  Tried to give her the bottle and rock her to sleep, all while everyone towards the back end of the plane turned around and gave me looks.  Nothing worked.  I started to get teary eyed...What has happened to my baby??

Finally after those two and half hours were up trying to wrestle a tired, grumpy, hungry, fussy, baby, the pilot said his usual decent prompt and I sat in my seat.  Millie started crying...hard.  I was frantic and pulled out everything I had to try to calm her.  I am sure I looked like a mess.  Was it her ears?  I gave her a sippy cup, but she wouldn't suck.  Her paci?  Didn't work either.

So...I just let her cry.

Then, all my emotions let loose.  The lady next to me said that it happens to everyone (yah right!).  I told her that I was never flying again and how sorry I was, all while crying.

Crying mom.  Crying baby.  Bugged passengers.  Flight attendants who had parenting comments to say.
Not a good picture.

Right when we landed, of course, Millie falls asleep.  Figures.

The lights turn on, Millie wakes up from her 10 minute nap, and is all smiles and babbling.

I was humiliated!!  All my confidence from earlier on in the day was shot.

I walked straight out to Cason waiting at the curb, sobbing.  No baggage claim, bathroom stop, or anything.  I was so embarrassed that I asked him to go get my bag for me.

On the ride home, Millie went right to sleep.

Lessons learned that day:  Rarely anything goes as planned with a baby.  So, next time just go with the flow.  Don't be so confident.  And don't judge someone for not being able to calm their baby...it might just happen to you!

Ps. What would you have done??

new mom favorites

Every mom has her favorites.
Here are a few of my favorite things for baby that everyone needs as a mom to a newborn baby.

My dear friend told me about these so I ordered some.
They have been a lifesaver!
They are just like the hospital ones, but cuter.

SwaddleDesigns swaddle blanket.
These are the best swaddling blankets out there.  And they are lightweight too.
Baby Magic...love the smell!
And Johnson's head-to-toe body wash...love the smell too!

Little Giraffe Luxe blanket.
These are the softest things!
Anytime we wrap Millie in it she falls right to sleep and always takes the best naps while wrapped in it.

Bebe Au Lait burp cloths.
Very absorbent!  And cute too!

And I can't let a post go by without posting a few pictures of my baby girl.

five days old.

one week old.

What are a few of your favorite newborn items?

Baby #1: 8 month-a-roos

32 weeks...8 months.

And my feet are starting to disappear

56 days equals
8 weeks which equals
2 months
until baby is here!

Which reminds me that we have
No name yet...
I think about it EVERYday.
We have a list, with about three names not crossed off yet,
but for some reason I am not liking any of them right now.
Looks like it'll have to wait.

Baby #1: 6 1/2 months

It goes by soooo fast....

yet, soooo slow at the same time.

I'm definitely not ready yet, but I don't know how much more room is in there!
My belly is tight.
and hurts when I eat too much.
Which is just about every meal.
But then I get to feel her kick, and move around.

Isn't it amazing that there is a human that is being created inside of you?!

I can't even comprehend it.
and I don't think I need to.

She's all I think about. (and Case too)
Pretty much all I talk about.
and I get emotional thinking about how much I love her already.

here's to 6 1/2 months.
only 14 more weeks.
and 94 more days.

{comments as of late}

Here are some funny things people have said to me lately...

I'll be in the store and people will say out of the blue, "So when are you due?"  It kind of catches me off guard.  What if I was just really fat?!

The other day I was at Trader Joe's with the three year old I nanny for and he wanted these penguin fruit snacks.  The penguins tummies are filled with juice, kinda like Gushers, and he looked at me and said, "Hey these penguins have big belly's just like yours!"  I about died laughing.  It was really cute!

A lady said to me the other day, "Oh, I didn't know you were pregnant!  I can tell you are having a girl because boys your belly goes straight out, and girls it goes all over!"  ....Thanks.

I am only expecting more comments and tummy rubs the further along I get.  Can't wait to hear what people have to say when I am almost due!

What things did/do people say to you?

Kauai Revealed

Day 1: Flew to Honolulu.
It was the scariest flight we have ever been on.
A lot of turbulence.
People were throwing up and we weren't allowed to get out of our seats.
Had a layover in Honolulu and then flew to Kauai.

We drove this blue baby around town.
haha.
White trash?
...never!

For dinner that night we ate at Puka Dogs. (pooka dogs)
Very funky way to eat a hot dog, but it was really good!

And we finished it off with Lappert's Ice Cream.

Day 2:  We went to a delicious brunch in Princeville.  Hiked down to "Secret Beach" and went to Wailua Falls.

Everything from seafood to waffles with coconut syrup!

Hanalei Bay view.

secret beach

Wailua Falls.

Day 3:  We hung out at our hotel on the beach.

Cason went snorkeling.

For dinner we went to the Beach House restaurant.
It was the best meal!
Cason got wasabi crusted Hawaiian red snapper and I got macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi.
(you'll notice throughout this post, that our trip was planned around our dinner.
We love good food!!)

The beautiful sunset.

Day 4:  We went to see the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.
It was just as the name describes it.

Day 5: We hiked part of the Na Pali Coast.
It was a rainy day, but we drove about an hour an half to get there so we couldn't turn back.

This was a favorite of ours the whole trip.
Every time we went we got the Kauai special called Gotta Guava.
It was the tastiest treat!!

Starting our adventure.  We didn't know what we were getting ourselves into.
It was pouring rain, muddy and very slippery.

On our way to the bottom of the coast.

We made it!!
We were exhausted by the time we got to the beach
that was at the bottom of the Na Pali Coast.
We were supposed to cross a waist high river to get to the beach,
but we talked to some people who had already been and they gave us a shortcut
so we didn't have to cross the river.
(although we were already drenched from the rain.)
We found a little private cave that we
sat in to protect us from the rain and ate lunch.
PB&J's have never tasted so good!!!

the view.

On the way back up the trail.
Yes I fell pretty bad on the way down, hence the muddy shirt.

For dinner we went to Pomodoro's Italian Restaurant.
It was good but WAY overpriced.

Then we treated ourselves to gelato.

Day 6: We were so exhausted from the day before so we soaked up the rays.

We ate dinner at Keoki's.
I got a burger which was sooo good!
And Cason got a sirloin steak.
Would recommend this place for lunch. Not dinner.

Day 7: We were fried from the day before, so we sat by the pool, read and hung out under the umbrella.

We went to check out this place called Spouting Horn.
It was so neat.  The waves would roll in and get sucked under this rock,
then it would make a sound like a horn and the water would shoot out.

Can't forget the roosters.
They are everywhere.
Cock-a-doodle-doodling
ALL DAY LONG!

Just about everyday we would get one of these
shave ice with macadamia nut ice cream on the bottom.
Our favorite!

That night for dinner we went to the Hyatt in Poipu and listened to live music.
It was a great relaxing way to end the trip.
If you've got the big bucks we'd recommend staying here.
You would never have to leave the hotel, there was so much to do.

The view from where we ate.

Day 8: flew home.

So, now you don't even need to go to Hawaii.  You've seen it all right here.  :)

It was a much needed trip for many reasons:

celebrating busy season being over
one last hoorah before baby comes
our anniversary in May
and just a much needed vacation.
